Where Does FireAlpaca Save Files and Config?

FireAlpaca saves .mdp canvases where you choose, with brushes and autosave backups inside its config folder.

Last updated

FireAlpaca never picks a save spot for you. File > Save asks for a folder on first save. Native .mdp keeps layers. Anything else flattens the image. Get in the habit of Save As for versions, since overwrite saves give no second chance.

Settings live apart from art. Open Help, then Open Config Folder, to find brushes, palettes, shortcuts, and the Autosave_backup folder. Copy that whole folder to back up your setup. Artwork needs its own backup in Documents or cloud storage.

Where FireAlpaca stores this, by platform

Windows
User-chosen folder for art (.mdp); Help > Open Config Folder for settings

Invalid MDP errors sometimes have a rescue copy in Autosave_backup inside the config folder. Back up brushes with the Easy Backup feature since version 2.13.17.

macOS
User-chosen folder for art (.mdp); Help > Open Config Folder for settings

Same split as Windows. The config folder survives reinstalls, so a broken brush set stays broken until you reset or restore it by hand.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up FireAlpaca brushes?

Use the built in backup for Brushes, Colors, Gradients, and Shortcuts, then copy the config folder from Help and Open Config Folder to a USB stick or cloud drive. Artwork files need separate copies.

Can FireAlpaca recover an unsaved file?

Sometimes. Check Help and Open Config Folder, then Autosave_backup, for a recent copy. It only helps if autosave ran before the crash. Manual saves are still the dependable route.
