Where Does Corel Painter Store Brushes and Files?

Corel Painter keeps active brushes in Roaming AppData workspaces, with paintings saved as .RIF files where you choose.

Last updated

Corel Painter splits factory content from your content. The installer drops default brushes under Program Files. The moment you create variants or custom workspaces, those live in Roaming AppData under Corel plus your version plus Default. That is the folder that matters during migration.

Paintings themselves go wherever File then Save points, usually as .RIF to keep wet paint editable. Export flat TIFF or PSD for other apps. Back up the AppData workspace tree plus your painting folders, since one without the other restores only half your setup.

Where Corel Painter stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\Corel\Painter [version]\Default\Brushes

Factory brushes sit in C:\Program Files\Corel\Painter [version]\Brushes. Paintings (.RIF) live wherever you saved them. Copy the whole Default workspace folder to move variants and layouts.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Corel/Painter [version]/Default

Same workspace split as Windows. Exact path may vary by version, check Painter preferences if this does not match. Keep .RIF masters backed up apart from flat exports.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move Corel Painter brushes to a new computer?

Copy the Default workspace folder above with Painter closed, then launch and reselect your workspace. Factory brushes reinstall with the app, so the AppData copy carries your variants and custom palettes.

What format should I save Corel Painter paintings in?

Use .RIF while working to preserve wet media behavior and layers. Export TIFF or PSD when leaving Painter. Flattened formats cannot restore impasto or liquid ink dynamics later.
