Where Does Decent Sampler Store Libraries and Settings?

Decent Sampler settings file, sample libraries and database paths on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Last updated

Decent Sampler splits its data cleanly. A DecentSampler.xml file holds preferences, a SampleLibrary.db tracks installed libraries, and a Sample Libraries folder holds the actual sounds. All three live under one Decidedly root per OS.

The defaults are generous but movable. The in app library manager installs straight into Sample Libraries, and its location dialog accepts custom folders including %USERPROFILE% and tilde expansion. Resetting a messed up setup is one deleted XML file.

Where Decent Sampler stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\Decidedly\DecentSampler

Settings, database, cover art cache and the default Sample Libraries folder all sit here. Log files go to a DecentSampler folder beside it. Newer versions offer a Use Default button in the locate dialog.

macOS
~/Music/Audio Music Apps/Decidedly/DecentSampler

Same interior as Windows, reached through the Music folder rather than Library. Plugin binaries themselves install to the standard Audio Plug-Ins paths; only settings and libraries live here.

Linux
~/.config/DecentSampler

No installer here; VST files go in ~/.vst and ~/.vst3 manually. Settings, database, cover art and default libraries all share this one config root.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reset Decent Sampler settings?

Delete DecentSampler.xml with the plugin closed and it regenerates fresh on next launch. Keep a copy first if you only want to reset one misbehaving setting, since the file holds all of them.

Where do I put third party Decent Sampler libraries?

Inside the app with the BROWSE button, which installs to the Sample Libraries folder automatically. Manual installs are dspreset or dslibrary files you can place there yourself.

Does the iOS version use the same folders?

Yes, under the same per OS roots with dspreset and dslibrary support. Library and settings locations follow the same pattern as desktop.
