Where Does Omnisphere Store the STEAM Library?

Omnisphere STEAM library folder on Windows and macOS, plus how moving it works when the drive fills up.

Last updated

Omnisphere's sounds live in a folder called STEAM, inside a Spectrasonics parent. It also serves Keyscape and Trilian, so one giant shared library covers all three instruments. Expect tens of gigabytes; this is the folder that eats sample drives.

The folder is often an alias or shortcut rather than the real data. Spectrasonics lets you relocate the library and leave a link behind, so if STEAM looks suspiciously small, resolve the link before measuring or backing up.

Where Omnisphere stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\ProgramData\Spectrasonics\STEAM

ProgramData is hidden, so paste the path into the Explorer address bar or enable hidden items. VST plugins themselves install under Steinberg paths, but all sound content lives here. To move it, copy first and let Omnisphere re-link on next launch.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Spectrasonics/STEAM

Use Go to Folder in Finder, since Library stays hidden. The Spectrasonics parent may hold an alias named STEAM pointing at an external drive; follow it to reach the real samples before copying anything.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move the Omnisphere STEAM folder to another drive?

Copy the STEAM folder to the new drive, then open Omnisphere and point it at the new location when it asks. Confirm both copies match in size before deleting the original, since the library is tens of gigabytes.

Do Keyscape and Trilian share this folder?

Yes. Keyscape, Trilian and Omnisphere all read the same STEAM folder, which is exactly why Spectrasonics documents one shared location instead of one per instrument.

I cannot see ProgramData on Windows, what now?

ProgramData is hidden by default. Enable hidden items in the Explorer View tab, or paste the full path into the address bar to jump straight there.
