Where Does Descript Store Project Files Locally?
Descript is cloud-first but caches projects on disk for editing. Local data paths on Windows and Mac, and how to free space safely.
Last updated
Descript keeps the canonical copy of every project in its cloud. What sits on your drive is a working cache: downloaded media, transcripts and per-project folders under accounts. Editing pulls files down, closing the app does not clean them up.
That cache is why Descript can eat tens of gigabytes quietly. The safe diet is inside the app: Drive view > Projects > Downloaded, sort by size, right-click and Remove download. That frees disk while the cloud copy stays intact. Only delete the folders below by hand when fully uninstalling.
Where Descript stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Descript
Accounts, per-project media and cache. The app installer itself lives in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Descript. Prefer Remove download in the app over deleting here.
~/Library/Application Support/Descript
Same cache role as Windows. Descript's own uninstall guide points here for a full wipe. Don't forget the tilde: without it Finder opens the system Application Support instead.
Frequently asked questions
How do I free disk space used by Descript?
In Descript open Drive view, go to Projects > Downloaded, sort by size, and Remove download on finished projects. That clears local media while keeping everything in the cloud. Reopening a project downloads it again on demand.
Does deleting a Descript project remove it everywhere?
Yes, Delete removes it from the cloud and all machines. To keep the project but reclaim space, use Remove download instead. Reserve full deletes for work you truly want gone.
