Diablo III heroes, stash and paragon progress live on Blizzard servers, so reinstalling never threatens your characters. The local Documents folder holds account caches, chat logs and the D3Prefs config.
D3Prefs.txt is the file people actually hunt for: graphics, sound and gameplay toggles beyond the menus. Back up the folder and settings plus hero portraits survive a move.
