Where Does ExpressVPN Store Settings and Diagnostics?

ExpressVPN manages settings internally, with diagnostics exported from the Help page and manuals kept by you.

Last updated

ExpressVPN keeps login, locations, and preferences in its own app storage. There is no documented user facing config file to edit. Support flows through the app: Help page, diagnostics bundle, and protocol picker.

Manual OpenVPN files from the setup page are the files you actually own. Save them in one folder per device. When support asks for logs, generate them in app rather than digging through Library or AppData by hand.

Where ExpressVPN stores this, by platform

Windows
In-app storage, diagnostics via Help page

Save the diagnostics file the app generates and send it to support. Manual .ovpn files from the setup portal live wherever you downloaded them.

macOS
In-app storage, diagnostics via Help page

Same model as Windows, including the expressvpnctl CLI in newer builds. Keep manual configs in ~/Documents or another stable folder, not Downloads.

Frequently asked questions

How do I send ExpressVPN logs to support?

Open the app Help or Support section and generate diagnostics there. Save the file it produces. That bundle has what support needs without exposing more of your system than required.

Where are my ExpressVPN manual configs?

Wherever you saved them from the setup page. They do not auto file into the app. Keep them in one folder and delete stale ones so you never connect with an expired certificate.
