Where Does Foundry VTT Store User Data?

Foundry VTT keeps worlds, systems and modules in a User Data folder: LocalAppData on Windows, Application Support on Mac.

Last updated

Foundry VTT splits its files in two. The program lives in one place and everything you care about lives in a separate User Data folder with Config, Data and Logs inside. Worlds, systems, modules and uploads all sit under Data.

The safest way to open it is from inside the app: right click the tray icon and choose Browse User Data. Copying that folder while Foundry is running is how databases get corrupted, so shut it down first. Cloud sync folders are equally dangerous for the same reason.

Where Foundry VTT stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\FoundryVTT

Default User Data path. Worlds are in Data\worlds, the most important thing to back up. The path can be moved from the setup screen or with the dataPath flag, so check the Configuration tab if this folder looks empty.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/FoundryVTT

Same internal layout: Config, Data, Logs. Copy the User Data Path field from the Configuration screen and use Go to Folder in Finder to jump straight there.

Linux
~/.local/share/FoundryVTT

First choice of three fallbacks, then ~/FoundryVTT, then /local/FoundryVTT. A quick archive is tar -czvf foundry-backup.tar.gz Data Config run inside the folder.

Frequently asked questions

which foundry vtt folders actually need backing up

Data/worlds first, since that is your campaigns. Then Data/modules and Data/systems if reinstalling many add-ons sounds painful, plus Config so server settings survive. Logs can be skipped.

can i keep foundry data in dropbox or onedrive

Do not. Sync tools copy database files mid-write while Foundry runs, which corrupts worlds. Back up to cloud storage only with Foundry fully stopped, or use the built-in backup tool added in version 11.5.

how do i move foundry vtt data to another drive

Create the new folder, point User Data Path at it in the setup Configuration tab, stop Foundry, then move the old contents over. Always keep a zip of the old folder until the new location loads correctly.
