FreeMind keeps behavior in user.properties inside ~/.freemind with maps as .mm files wherever you save them. Java preferences back some options, but the properties file rules.
The fork Freeplane uses a different home, so do not merge the two trees. Autosaves land near maps by default; point them central in preferences for tidier backups. Close maps before copying live files.
