Where Does FrostWire Store Downloads and Settings?

Where FrostWire keeps incomplete downloads, shared files and settings on Windows, Mac and Linux desktops.

Last updated

FrostWire splits state two ways: a .frostwire settings folder in your home directory, and a save folder for finished and partial downloads. Java builds use the same split on every desktop OS. Library metadata and resume state stay in the hidden folder.

The save folder is user changeable, so the Options page is the source of truth after first setup. Back up both halves with the app closed. Resume files dislike being copied while transfers run, and a partial copy restores as stalled torrents.

Where FrostWire stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\.frostwire

Settings, library index and resume state in a hidden home folder. Downloads default to a FrostWire save folder beside it. Confirm the save path in Options after any move.

macOS
~/.frostwire

Same hidden home folder under the Mac home directory. Use Finder Go to Folder to reach it. Save folder defaults under home until changed in Options.

Linux
~/.frostwire

Same hidden home folder pattern on Linux. Distro and tarball builds share it. Copy whole with transfers paused or closed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move FrostWire to a new computer without losing downloads?

Close FrostWire and copy the .frostwire folder plus your save folder elsewhere. Torrent resume state lives in the config tree, so both parts matter for a clean move.

Where are my FrostWire downloads by default?

Open FrostWire Options and read the save location field. The default points inside your user profile, but the field always wins after you change it once.
