Where Does Godot Keep Settings and User Data?
Where Godot keeps editor settings, per project user data and downloaded export templates on each OS.
Last updated
Godot splits state three ways: editor settings in the config folder (~/.config/godot), per project user data in app_userdata/<project> under the data folder, and export templates versioned beside them. Projects themselves live wherever you created them and reference these trees at runtime.
The version number in editor_settings-4.x.xml matters: major versions keep separate settings files that do not migrate automatically. Upgrading Godot means reconfiguring the editor once, while projects open unchanged. Back up the config file to skip even that.
Where Godot stores this, by platform
~/.config/godot
Editor settings as editor_settings-4.x.xml, user data in ~/.local/share/godot/app_userdata, templates in export_templates/<version>. Respects XDG overrides.
~/Library/Application Support/Godot
Same three way split as Linux under Application Support. Reach it in Finder with Go > Go to Folder.
%APPDATA%\Godot
Paste %APPDATA%\Godot into Explorer. Same editor settings, app_userdata and export_templates layout inside.
Frequently asked questions
How do I reset Godot editor settings without harming projects?
Delete or rename the editor_settings-4.x.xml in the config folder with Godot closed. The editor regenerates defaults on next launch. Project files are untouched: editor settings and project data live in different trees by design.
Where do export templates go and why do exports fail?
Install them from Editor > Manage Export Templates, which downloads into export_templates/<version>. The running game never reads them; export presets reference the versioned folder. Mismatched template versions are the usual cause of one click export failures.
