Where Does Heroic Games Launcher Store Config and Saves?
Heroic keeps settings, logs and store metadata in per-OS config folders, while game saves live in each prefix. Paths and backup tips.
Last updated
Heroic splits its data three ways. Its own settings live in a heroic folder (config.json, the store cache, per-game configs and logs). Epic and GOG account data sit beside it in a legendary folder. Actual game saves live inside each game's Wine or Proton prefix, exactly where the Windows version would put them.
The Reset Heroic button wipes the heroic folder but spares GOG install records, so back it up first. For saves, open the game's settings in Heroic to find its prefix, then dig to drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData inside. Flatpak installs nest everything under ~/.var/app/com.heroicgameslauncher.hgl instead.
Where Heroic Games Launcher stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\heroic
Settings cache plus %USERPROFILE%\.config\heroic and .config\legendary beside it. Per-game settings and play logs sit in the GameConfig subfolder.
~/Library/Application Support/heroic
Cache role here, with real settings in ~/.config/heroic and store data in ~/.config/legendary. Same prefix logic for game saves as elsewhere.
~/.config/heroic
Settings, caching, GOG games metadata and logs, with ~/.config/legendary alongside. Flatpak moves both under ~/.var/app/com.heroicgameslauncher.hgl/config.
Frequently asked questions
Where are my Heroic game saves?
Inside each game's Wine or Proton prefix, mirroring Windows paths. Find the prefix in the game's Heroic settings, then look under drive_c/users/steamuser for Proton titles. Native Linux games save in their standard home-folder spots.
How do I back up Heroic before reinstalling?
Copy the heroic and legendary config folders for your OS plus every game prefix or save folder. Restoring the configs makes the library reappear as-is. Never use Reset Heroic as a backup step since it deletes the settings folder.
