Where Does Legendary Store Config and Game Data?

Legendary keeps config.ini, installed.json, and library caches in ~/.config/legendary on Linux and Mac.

Last updated

Legendary is a small CLI, so its footprint is one directory: ~/.config/legendary on Linux and Mac. Inside sit config.ini (install dir, per game wine settings, EGL sync), installed.json (what is installed and where), assets.json (library versions), and user.json (login).

Games themselves install wherever install_dir points, often ~/Games. Deleting the config dir logs you out and forgets installs without touching game files, which is exactly the fix when the library shows games you already deleted.

Where Legendary stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/legendary

config.ini plus installed.json, assets.json, and user.json. Override the location with LEGENDARY_CONFIG_PATH in the environment.

macOS
~/.config/legendary

Same layout as Linux. Per game wine prefixes and crossover bottles are referenced from config.ini sections per app name.

Windows
%APPDATA%\legendary

Windows home for the same files. EGL sync uses the fixed ProgramData Manifests path on this platform.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Legendary record installed games?

Open installed.json in the config dir. Each entry records install path and executable, which is what launchers read to find your games.

How do I move the Legendary config directory?

Set LEGENDARY_CONFIG_PATH to the folder you want. Heroic uses this to keep its own Legendary copy separate from yours.

How do I sync with the official Epic launcher?

Point egl_programdata at a Manifests folder and enable egl_sync in config.ini on non Windows systems. On Windows the EGL path is fixed.
