Where Does Vegas Pro Store Projects and Backups?

Vegas Pro projects, autosaves and versioned settings on Windows, and the temp folder that owns them.

Last updated

Vegas Pro projects (.veg) live wherever you save them, with .veg.bak siblings recording the last saved state on every save. Crash recovery runs through .autosave.veg copies in the Temporary files folder (Preferences, General), deleted on clean exit.

Version 22 adds Live Save plus minutely, hourly and daily backups routable to temp, project or custom folders. Settings version with the release (%APPDATA% and Local VEGAS Pro trees plus Sony branded registry keys), so major upgrades start fresh rather than inheriting. Removable media gets copied into temp automatically, which explains the ballooning.

Where Vegas Pro stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\VEGAS Pro\[version]\

Per version UI layouts and Roaming extensions (version number in path). Temp folder default in %LOCALAPPDATA%\VEGAS Pro (autosaves, media copies). Machine extensions in C:\ProgramData\VEGAS Pro. Prefs in HKCU Sony Creative Software keys. Windows only.

Frequently asked questions

Where are Vegas Pro autosaves after a crash?

In the Temporary files folder from Preferences, General, as .autosave.veg files. Relaunch promptly and accept recovery; clean exits delete them, so they exist only after real crashes.

Do Vegas Pro settings carry across major versions?

No. Each major keeps versioned AppData trees and registry keys, so upgrades start default. Migrate by hand or accept the rebuild; old trees stay behind harmlessly.
