Where Is the IdeaVim Config File?

IdeaVim reads ~/.ideavimrc from your home directory on every OS, with an optional lookup file for machine specific parts.

Last updated

IdeaVim keeps things simple: one .ideavimrc file in your home directory, shared by every JetBrains IDE on the machine. There is no per IDE copy to keep in sync.

Machine specific bits split out cleanly. A second file sourced conditionally holds OS only mappings, so the same dotfiles repo works on Windows, Mac and Linux without forks.

Where IdeaVim stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\.ideavimrc

Single config for all JetBrains IDEs. Use has('win') guards inside for Windows only mappings. Changes apply on IDE restart, or with :source ~/.ideavimrc right away.

macOS
~/.ideavimrc

Same file, same role. The IdeaVim plugin must be enabled per IDE, but they all read this one path. Version it in dotfiles like any vimrc.

Linux
~/.ideavimrc

Same arrangement. An optional ~/.ideavimrc.local sourced from the main file keeps per machine extras out of the shared repo.

Frequently asked questions

why is ideavim ignoring my vimrc

IdeaVim never reads ~/.vimrc, only ~/.ideavimrc. Copy the mappings you want into the ideavimrc file. Plugin specific commands from real Vim mostly have no equivalent inside the IDE.

how do i reload ideavim config without restarting

Run :source ~/.ideavimrc in the IDE's Vim command line. Most options apply instantly. A restart is only needed when something silently fails to reload.
