Where Does JetBrains Toolbox Store IDE Installs?

JetBrains Toolbox tracks installed IDEs, versions, and update channels in local app data. Projects themselves live wherever you cloned them.

Last updated

Toolbox is a launcher and updater, not a project store. Installed IDE editions with versions and channels, update policies, and JetBrains account login live in local app data. Your code stays in its own repos far away.

That split keeps migrations light: sign in, install the IDEs, and open existing projects. Settings sync carries keymaps and plugins between machines when enabled. Exact folder names may vary by version, so manage installs inside Toolbox rather than deleting folders by hand. Toolbox also stages EAP builds beside stable ones.

Where JetBrains Toolbox stores this, by platform

Windows
%localappdata%\JetBrains\Toolbox\

Installed IDEs and channels here; projects live in their own repos. Exact folder names may vary by version. Reinstall IDEs per machine; settings sync softens moves.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/JetBrains/Toolbox/

Same launcher model as Windows. IDEs install per Mac under Applications with Toolbox tracking versions. Sign in for tool list sync.

Linux
~/.local/share/JetBrains/Toolbox/

Same layout as other platforms under the home config tree. Manage installs in Toolbox; manual folder deletion confuses version tracking.

Frequently asked questions

Does Toolbox sync between computers?

Yes for the tool list and update settings on login. Installed IDEs live per machine and do not transfer; reinstall them through Toolbox on the new PC. Project SDK settings travel with each project, not with Toolbox.

How do I roll back an IDE update?

Install the new version side by side, verify plugins and keymaps, then remove the old one from Toolbox. Roll back by reinstalling the previous build number from the version list. Settings sync softens the jump when enabled.
