Where Does Keet Store Profiles and Chats?
Keet keeps chats device local in app data folders, with account recovery through a seed phrase backup file.
Last updated
Keet is peer to peer with no cloud mailbox. Messages, keys, and media cache live in the local app data folder on each device. Losing all devices without a backup means losing the identity. That tradeoff is the point of the design.
Back up from inside Keet to create an encrypted profile file guarded by your password. Write down the 24 word seed as well. Desktop paths follow normal Electron conventions, mobile uses private storage.
Where Keet stores this, by platform
%AppData%\Keet (local profile and chats)
Device local Pear storage. No server copy exists. Export the encrypted profile backup and store it apart from the PC before reinstalling.
~/Library/Application Support/Keet (local profile and chats)
Same local only model. Installing in user Applications helps auto update on managed Macs. Keep seed phrase and backup file together in a safe place.
~/.config/Keet (local profile and chats)
AppImage and Snap layouts differ slightly but stay under home. Extra libs like libgtk and libnss may be needed on minimal distros. Backup profile before distro hopping.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move Keet to a new device?
Create an encrypted backup in Keet settings on the old device, install Keet on the new one, and restore with your password plus seed phrase. There is no username login to pull from a server.
Where are Keet files I received?
Shared files land in the download folder you picked or the app cache until you save them out. Copy important files to Documents. Clearing app data removes unsaved transfers.
