Where Are LINE Chat Files Stored?
LINE's data folder on Windows and Mac, where the chat databases sit, and where downloaded photos and videos land on each device.
Last updated
LINE keeps two different kinds of file and they do not live together. The chat database, your messages, contacts and stickers, sits inside LINE's own data folder. Photos and videos you download go wherever you point them at download time, or into the gallery folders on a phone.
On Windows the whole data folder is one directory under AppData\Local, and copying it is how people move their history onto a new PC. On macOS it is a sandbox container, which is why it looks opaque until a backup tool is given Full Disk Access.
There is no supported way to read the desktop databases directly. LINE encrypts them, and the only export it offers is Save chat, one conversation at a time.
Where LINE stores this, by platform
C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\LINE\
Not %APPDATA% (Roaming). Everything LINE for Windows uses lives under AppData\Local: the executable in bin\current, encrypted chat databases in Data\db, and backups in Data\backup. Copying this folder to another PC carries your history with it. For received files, LINE's own help says to check the location you designated when you downloaded them, which on Windows is usually the Downloads folder.
~/Library/Containers/jp.naver.line.mac/
LINE for Mac is sandboxed, so its data, cache and encrypted chat database all sit inside this container. Reach it with Finder > Go > Go to Folder, and give any backup utility Full Disk Access before it can read the contents. Cache files also appear in ~/Library/Caches/jp.naver.line.mac. As on Windows, downloaded files go where you direct them.
Internal storage > Images > LINE and Internal storage > Videos > LINE
LINE's own help pages give these labels for photos and videos saved from a chat. The wording shifts between Android versions and manufacturer skins, and behind the Images and Videos categories the real folders are usually Pictures and Movies. Chat history itself is not kept as readable files on the phone; the supported backup route is Google Drive.
Photos app for saved photos and videos
There is no LINE folder to browse to on an iPhone. Anything you save from a chat lands in the Photos app, and documents exported with Save to Files appear wherever you filed them in the Files app. Chat history lives on the device and in iCloud Drive backups rather than in a folder you can open.
Frequently asked questions
Where is LINE chat history stored on a PC?
In encrypted EDB files at C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\LINE\Data\db on Windows, and inside the jp.naver.line.mac container on Mac. They are not readable SQLite files, and copying them on their own does nothing. LINE's only supported export is Save chat, one conversation at a time.
Where do LINE downloaded photos and videos go on PC?
Wherever you choose in the save dialog; accepting the default on Windows usually means the Downloads folder. LINE's help page states that PC downloads go to the file locations you designated at download time. Use Save as when you download something to put it somewhere specific each time.
How do I move LINE chat history to a new computer?
On Windows, close LINE and copy the whole AppData\Local\LINE folder to the same place on the new PC before signing in. That keeps local history without going through the phone. LINE's supported route is account transfer or a mobile backup, and the Mac equivalent is the jp.naver.line.mac container.
