Where Does LINE Store Chats and Downloads?

LINE's encrypted desktop database on Windows plus mobile backup and export flows.

Last updated

LINE desktop keeps its cache in an encrypted EDB database under LocalAppData, which reads as gibberish without the client. That makes the supported flows the real answer: per chat Save chat exports on desktop, and PIN plus Drive backups on mobile.

Cross OS moves only carry 14 days of history without Premium Backup. Same OS plus a proper backup carries everything, so plan the transfer before wiping the old phone.

Where LINE stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\LINE\Data\db

Encrypted EDB cache, not portable by hand. Migrate by copying the whole %LOCALAPPDATA%\LINE tree with LINE closed, or export per chat via Chats > menu > Save chat to .txt.

Android
Google Drive backup

Back up via Home > Settings > Chat history backup > Back up now. Restore on the new phone during account transfer. Cross OS restores only include the last 14 days without Premium.

iOS
iCloud Drive backup

Same flow with iCloud Drive instead. Set a backup PIN first so cross OS moves and PIN only restores keep working.

Frequently asked questions

Can I read LINE's local database directly?

Not usefully. Message EDB files are encrypted, so exports or full folder migration are the only practical routes. Forensics papers confirm the encryption.

What transfers with a LINE account move?

Friends, groups, stickers, albums and notes always transfer. Full text plus media history needs a backup: Standard covers text free, Premium adds media for subscribers.
