Where Does Luakit Store Config and Browsing Data?

Luakit keeps Lua config in ~/.config/luakit and history, bookmarks, and styles under data folders.

Last updated

Luakit splits code from data. Config lives in ~/.config/luakit: userconf.lua for small tweaks or a full rc.lua copy from /etc/xdg/luakit. Copying rc.lua wins over the system file, so track upstream changes after updates.

Browsing data uses the XDG data dir, usually ~/.local/share/luakit, with history and bookmark databases plus styles and scripts. Cache sits apart and is safe to clear. Query luakit.config_dir inside the app if paths look custom.

Where Luakit stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/luakit

userconf.lua, rc.lua copies, and binds. Start with userconf.lua instead of forking rc.lua to stay update safe. System defaults live in /etc/xdg/luakit.

Linux
~/.local/share/luakit

History, bookmarks, cookies databases plus styles and adblock lists. Back this up with the config folder. Cache dir beside it can be skipped.

Frequently asked questions

Should I copy rc.lua or use userconf.lua?

Use userconf.lua for settings and binds. Copy rc.lua only for deep changes, then rebase it after Luakit updates. A stale rc.lua copy is the usual cause of breakage.

Where are Luakit bookmarks?

In the SQLite database under the data dir. Export with the community script if you need plain text. Copy the database file with Luakit closed for backup.
