Where Does Luanti Store Worlds and Mods?

Where Luanti (formerly Minetest) keeps worlds, mods, and config, including the rename paths.

Last updated

Luanti stores worlds, mods, games, and minetest.conf in one user folder per OS. Historically that meant ~/.minetest on Linux; current builds prefer ~/.luanti with backward-compatible fallback.

Mods and texture packs nest beside worlds, so one folder copy migrates everything playable. Server admins keep the same tree on headless hosts; only the binary path changes. Note the rename in any guide you follow.

Where Luanti stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\luanti\worlds

Worlds in worlds/ (map.sqlite plus players), mods in mods/, config minetest.conf. Flatpak and distro builds may sandbox this root.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/luanti/worlds

Same worlds plus mods layout. Older guides cite minetest-named siblings; both roots may exist after upgrades.

Linux
~/.luanti/worlds

Prefers ~/.luanti with ~/.minetest as fallback on many builds. Check both when worlds vanish after an upgrade.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move Luanti worlds?

Copy the worlds/ folder (one subfolder per world with map.sqlite plus players) to the matching path. Keep the engine version close; very old maps upgrade on load but cannot downgrade. Mods travel separately in mods/.

Minetest folder versus Luanti folder?

The engine renamed from Minetest to Luanti in 2024 and now prefers ~/.luanti (or the OS equivalent) while still reading ~/.minetest on many builds. Check both roots when worlds seem missing after upgrading launchers.
