Where Does Mattermost Store Data?

Mattermost Desktop cache and config paths on Windows, macOS and Linux, and what to clear for a clean login.

Last updated

Mattermost Desktop is an Electron app, so sessions, caches and IndexedDB stores live in the per OS Electron data folder under a Mattermost name. Downloaded files go to your normal Downloads folder instead.

Logging out keeps caches behind. For a clean slate, quit the app and remove the IndexedDB and Local Storage trees, then log in fresh. Server side history restores on login, so wiping local data is low risk compared to chat apps with local only stores. A config file beside caches sets servers and branding for managed installs.

Where Mattermost stores this, by platform

Windows
%appdata%\Mattermost

Paste into Explorer. Config and partitions sit inside. Quit Mattermost fully before copying or clearing anything here.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Mattermost

Use Go > Go to Folder in Finder. Downloads still land in ~/Downloads regardless of this cache location.

Linux
~/.config/Mattermost

Same Electron layout as Element and Slack. Server data resyncs on login, so local wipes mainly cost you draft text and view state.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fix Mattermost stuck on a blank screen?

Quit the app, back up the Mattermost folder, delete its IndexedDB and Cache contents, then relaunch and log in. History reloads from the server automatically.

Where are Mattermost downloads?

In your OS Downloads folder by default, changeable in Settings. The app data folder above holds only caches and session state, not transferred files.
