Where Does Minecraft Fabric Store Mods and Config?

Fabric mod .jar files, config files and loader versions on Windows, macOS and Linux, and how the layout differs from Forge.

Last updated

Fabric keeps things in the standard .minecraft folder, same as vanilla and Forge. Mods are plain .jar files dropped into the mods subfolder. Per mod settings land in a config sibling, and the loader itself lives under versions.

The practical gotcha is profiles. Fabric, Forge and vanilla all default to the same .minecraft root, so mixing loaders in one folder produces crashes that look mysterious. Give Fabric its own launcher profile or its own game directory and the layout stays clean.

Where Minecraft Fabric stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\.minecraft\mods

Paste %APPDATA%\.minecraft into the Explorer address bar. Mods go in the mods subfolder, settings in config. The launcher profile's Game Directory setting can move all of this elsewhere, so check there first if the folder looks empty.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods

Use Go to Folder in Finder. The structure mirrors Windows exactly: mods for .jar files, config for settings, versions for the loader install.

Linux
~/.minecraft/mods

Show hidden files to see it. Prism, CurseForge and other launchers use their own instance folders instead, so only this path applies to the vanilla launcher with Fabric installed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put Forge mods in the Fabric mods folder?

No. Forge mods need the Forge loader and Fabric mods need Fabric Loader plus usually the Fabric API. The folders look alike but the two loaders read different mod formats, so keep them in separate profiles or installs.

Where does the Fabric API go?

Install the Fabric API .jar in the mods folder like any other mod. Most Fabric mods depend on it and will crash at startup without it, so grab the version matching your Minecraft version.
