Where Does Minecraft NeoForge Store Mods and Config?

NeoForge mods, config and version folders on Windows, macOS and Linux, and how to tell them apart from old Forge files.

Last updated

NeoForge inherited Forge's folder layout when it forked, so veterans will feel at home. The .minecraft root holds mods for .jar files, config for per mod settings, and versions for the loader install. The split from classic Forge happened after 1.20, which is why both loaders still look alike on disk.

Keep one loader per profile. A folder containing Forge and NeoForge files together loads neither correctly. Name your launcher profiles after the loader and version and this stops being a problem.

Where Minecraft NeoForge stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\.minecraft\mods

Paste %APPDATA%\.minecraft into the Explorer address bar. Check the launcher profile's Game Directory first, since custom profiles move the whole tree and the default folder then looks abandoned.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods

Use Go to Folder in Finder. Mods, config and versions sit side by side exactly as on Windows, under the lower case minecraft folder.

Linux
~/.minecraft/mods

Show hidden files to see it. Third party launchers keep instances elsewhere, so this path is for the vanilla launcher with the NeoForge installer run against it.

Frequently asked questions

Do old Forge mods work in NeoForge?

Mostly yes for recent versions, since NeoForge forked from Forge and kept the layout. Copy the mods and config folders across, then test. Anything version specific will say so in its crash log.

How do I tell a NeoForge mod from a Fabric one?

Open the mods folder and look for a .toml file inside the mod .jar, or check the config folder for the mod id. NeoForge mods ship a mods.toml descriptor while Fabric mods do not, which settles most arguments fast.
