Where Does Minecraft Java Save Screenshots?

Minecraft Java saves screenshots to a screenshots folder inside .minecraft. Paths per OS and the F2 shortcut.

Last updated

Saves hold worlds while screenshots hold pictures. The game writes captures to a screenshots folder inside .minecraft on every platform. That folder sits beside saves, mods and resource packs rather than inside them.

Singleplayer and multiplayer shots land together with timestamps. The existing saves post covers worlds; this one covers the picture side. F2 captures without any setup.

Where Minecraft Java stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\.minecraft\screenshots

PNG captures with timestamps, beside saves and mods inside .minecraft. F2 captures in game. Copy the folder with the launcher quit for archives.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/screenshots

Same interior as Windows. On Mac the Library folder hides in Finder, so use Go to Folder rather than browsing by hand.

Linux
~/.minecraft/screenshots

Identical layout on Linux under home. Flatpak launchers keep their own .minecraft tree instead, so check those roots when this folder looks empty.

Frequently asked questions

Which key takes a screenshot?

Press F2 in game (Fn+F2 on some Macs). The chat confirms the capture and names the file. Screenshots land in the screenshots folder below, never in the saves tree, so check there when sharing builds.

How do I back up screenshots?

Copy the screenshots folder with the game quit. Packs and worlds travel separately in resourcepacks and saves beside it. Newer captures use dates while older ones use session numbers, so sort by date when archiving.
