Where Does Monal Store Accounts and Chats on iOS?

Monal keeps XMPP accounts and chat history in iOS app storage, with OMEMO keys on device.

Last updated

Monal holds accounts, rosters, message archives, and OMEMO keys in its iOS app container. No file path is reachable without jailbreak, so management happens in app settings. iCloud device backups may carry the container across phones.

Moving devices works best as a fresh login plus history sync from the server. OMEMO sessions need re-trusting on the new install. Export nothing by hand; there is no user facing file to copy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move Monal to a new iPhone?

Restore the iCloud backup or log in fresh and let archives resync. Re-verify OMEMO contacts from the new install. Keep the old phone until history loads.

Does deleting Monal lose chats?

Local copies go, server archives stay per retention. OMEMO keys on that device die with it, so start new sessions afterwards.
