Where Does Mumble Store Its Config and Identity?
Mumble splits data between a settings database and OS config files, and the database holds the certificate servers know you by.
Last updated
The file that matters most is mumble.sqlite. It holds your audio settings, server list, and above all your identity certificate. Servers with registered names or admin rights recognize the certificate, not your nickname.
Lose the database and you join as a stranger everywhere that mattered. Back it up before reinstalls and migrations. Window level preferences duplicate into the registry on Windows or plist and conf files elsewhere, but the sqlite is the irreplaceable half.
Where Mumble stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Mumble\mumble.sqlite
Extra settings sit in the registry at HKCU\Software\Mumble\Mumble. Newer builds may also write a mumble_settings.json under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Mumble.
~/Library/Application Support/Mumble/Mumble/.mumble.sqlite
Note the leading dot on the filename. Preferences mirror to ~/Library/Preferences/net.sourceforge.mumble.Mumble.plist.
~/.local/share/Mumble/Mumble/mumble.sqlite
Plain settings live in ~/.config/Mumble/Mumble.conf. Copy the sqlite to a new machine to keep your certificate and registrations.
Frequently asked questions
How do I keep my registered name on a new PC?
Copy mumble.sqlite from the old machine to the matching path on the new one before connecting. The certificate inside proves you are the same user to every server.
Where is the Murmur server config?
Separate concern. The Murmur server reads murmur.ini, unrelated to the client database above. Back up both if you run a server and use the client on one box.
