Where Does OpenRGB Store Profiles and Settings?
Where OpenRGB keeps OpenRGB.json, lighting profiles (.orp), and size configs (.ors) on each OS.
Last updated
OpenRGB keeps one JSON file for global settings plus separate files for profiles and device sizes. Profiles end in .orp, sizes in .ors, and all of them sit together in a single config folder per OS.
Older builds wrote these next to the exe when run portably, which confused backups. Current releases use the standard config folder below. If profiles seem missing after an update, check the old launch folder before assuming they are gone.
Where OpenRGB stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\OpenRGB\
Contains OpenRGB.json, *.orp profiles, and *.ors size files. Run once as admin for device detection. Older portable runs may have left copies next to the exe.
~/.config/OpenRGB/
Same files as Windows (OpenRGB.json, profiles, sizes). Install udev rules so devices appear without root.
~/.config/OpenRGB/
Same layout as Linux. Config lives under the user Library, which is hidden in Finder by default.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move OpenRGB profiles to another PC?
Copy OpenRGB.json plus every .orp profile and .ors size file to the same config folder on the new PC. Sizes are hardware specific, so re-detect devices first if the new machine has different RGB hardware.
Why does OpenRGB see no devices on a fresh install?
Run OpenRGB once as administrator on Windows so it can install the SMBus driver and see everything. On Linux, install the udev rules and add your user to the i2c group instead.
