Where Does OpenXcom Store Saves?

Where OpenXcom keeps saves, mods, configs, and TFTD content on every desktop OS.

Last updated

OpenXcom keeps a user folder per OS with saves, mods, and options.cfg: Documents on Windows, XDG data dir on Linux, Application Support on macOS. Vanilla X-COM data files sit beside or beneath it depending on install.

Extended builds (OXCE) share the same convention with their own folder name. When saves vanish after switching builds, the cause is usually the folder suffix differing between vanilla OpenXcom and OXCE. Check both names.

Where OpenXcom stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\OpenXcom\saves

Saves plus mods/ and options.cfg. OXCE builds use a suffixed sibling folder. Exact subpaths may vary by version; check the in-app data path if empty.

Linux
~/.local/share/openxcom/saves

Same saves and mods layout under the XDG data dir. Flatpak and distro packages may sandbox this; check the active data path in-app.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/OpenXcom/saves

Same layout. Use Go to Folder in Finder since Library is hidden. OXCE variant uses its own folder name beside this one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I migrate OpenXcom saves?

Copy the whole user folder (saves, mods, config) to the matching path on the new machine. Keep the vanilla DATA files in sync too; saves reference the original assets. Exact subpaths may vary slightly by OpenXcom version.

Where do mods go?

The user folder holds a mods/ dir plus options.cfg. Drop downloaded mods there and enable them in-game under Options, Mods. Total conversions and TFTD content follow the same layout.
