Where Does VCMI Store Saves and Mods?

Where VCMI keeps saves, mods, configs, and imported Heroes III data on every desktop OS.

Last updated

VCMI keeps one user folder per OS with Saves, Mods, config, and the imported Heroes III Data, Maps, and Mp3 files. Windows uses Documents\My Games\vcmi; Linux uses the XDG data dir; macOS its own Application Support path.

The launcher mediates first setup: place original Heroes III files, press Scan, finish in the launcher. After that the folder is self-contained. Power users can split paths with dirs.json, but defaults suit most players.

Where VCMI stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\vcmi\Saves

Saves in Saves/, mods in Mods/, plus imported Data/Maps/Mp3. Overridable via install-dir config/dirs.json. Finish campaigns before major updates; old saves rarely load.

Linux
~/.local/share/vcmi/Saves

Same Saves/Mods/config layout. Flatpak uses ~/.var/app/eu.vcmi.VCMI/data/vcmi/ instead. Place original Heroes III files via the launcher Scan step.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/vcmi/Saves

Same layout. Exact path may vary by install method; check the launcher settings for the active data dir if the folder looks empty.

Frequently asked questions

How do I migrate VCMI saves?

Copy the whole user folder (Saves, Mods, config) to the matching path on the new machine, then re-place the Heroes III Data, Maps, and Mp3 files via the launcher Scan. Saves across major VCMI versions usually do not load, so finish campaigns first.

Can I move the VCMI data folder?

Create config/dirs.json inside the install dir with userDataPath, userSavePath, and friends pointing at your preferred folders. All keys are optional and env vars expand. Move existing data over and restart.
