Where Does Old School RuneScape Store Cache?

OSRS cache folders per client on desktop, and why there are no save files to back up.

Last updated

Old School RuneScape has no saves: every item and level lives server side on your Jagex Account. Local disk holds cache only, and the path follows your client: jagexcache\oldschool\LIVE in your profile for standalone, %LOCALAPPDATA%\Jagex for the Jagex Launcher, .runelite\jagexcache for RuneLite.

Loading trouble ends at cache clearing: the Launcher cog, the deletejs5caches console command, or deleting LIVE/Data outright, then waiting out a full lobby rebuild. Mac mirrors the model (~/jagexcache plus the Launcher app). Linux Launcher builds stay beta; Proton and wrappers fill the gap.

Where Old School RuneScape stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\jagexcache\oldschool\LIVE\

Standalone client cache (delete to force redownload). Jagex Launcher uses %LOCALAPPDATA%\Jagex\Old School RuneScape\data; RuneLite uses %USERPROFILE%\.runelite\jagexcache. Progress is server side; cache only.

macOS
~/jagexcache/oldschool/LIVE/

Native Mac client cache (find via Spotlight). Jagex Launcher installs as /Applications/Jagex Launcher.app. Same server side model; folder size varies by client.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up my OSRS account?

You don't need to: everything lives on Jagex servers tied to your Jagex Account. Local cache rebuilds itself; protect the account (authenticator, bank PIN) instead of files.

OSRS is stuck loading. How do I clear the cache?

Use the Launcher Options cog, the deletejs5caches console command, or delete the LIVE/Data folder for your client. Expect a full 100 percent rebuild in the lobby afterwards.
