Where Does Pinta Store Settings?

Where Pinta keeps user settings and add-ins on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and what to delete for a reset.

Last updated

Pinta follows each OS convention for user data: Roaming AppData on Windows, Application Support on macOS, and .config on Linux. Your brushes, window layout, and recent files live there, not with the program itself.

That is why a reinstall never fixes a broken preference. Delete the user folder instead. It is a small directory and Pinta rebuilds it with defaults on next launch. Keep a copy if you have custom palettes you like.

Where Pinta stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Your-Name]\AppData\Roaming\Pinta\

User settings and recents. Delete this tree for a full reset; reinstalling alone preserves it. Program files live separately under Program Files.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Pinta/

Same role as on Windows. Use Go, Go to Folder in Finder since Library is hidden. Exact subfolder names may vary by version.

Linux
~/.config/Pinta/

Follows XDG_CONFIG_HOME. Snap and Flatpak installs sandbox this under ~/snap/pinta or ~/.var/app, so check there if the plain path is empty.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fully reset Pinta settings?

Quit Pinta, then delete the user folder for your OS listed here and relaunch. Reinstalling alone changes nothing, since settings live outside the program files. Exact layout may vary slightly by Pinta version.

Do Pinta add-ins live with the settings?

Add-ins and effects extend the install rather than the settings folder, so they usually survive a settings wipe. Check the program directory or your package manager if an effect goes missing after an update.
