Where Does Plottr Store Projects and Backups?

Where Plottr keeps outline projects, backups and Electron settings on Windows and Mac for safekeeping.

Last updated

Plottr is file based like most outlining tools. Each book is a project file you place yourself, usually under Documents, holding timelines, character sheets and place notes. App settings and license state live separately in Electron storage.

Back up the project file, not just settings. The settings folder remembers recent files and window layout, but chapters live in the project. Turn on automatic backups inside Plottr preferences for dated copies during drafts.

Where Plottr stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\Plottr

Projects are user placed files, commonly under Documents. Settings and license live in Electron storage beside them. Back up the project file itself for safety.

macOS
~/Documents/Plottr

Same file based pattern on Mac with settings under Application Support. Use Finder Go to Folder for settings. Automatic backups land beside the project when enabled.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up a Plottr outline?

Use File Save As for the project file and keep dated copies somewhere safe. Settings alone hold no story. The project file carries timelines, characters and places together.

I cannot find my Plottr project. Where is it?

Check File Recent and your Documents folder first. Plottr never forces a library location; the project lives exactly where you saved it. Templates ship inside the app bundle instead.
