Where Does Positron Store Settings?
Positron follows the VS Code settings layout with a settings.json for you and one per project. User paths and the workspace override.
Last updated
Positron stores settings the VS Code way, so anyone coming from Code feels at home. Global preferences live in a settings.json under the user directory, and each project can override them with its own file.
Project settings sit in a .vscode folder at the project root, which makes them easy to share through git. Server sessions are the exception: those write user settings under ~/.positron-server instead of the desktop locations below.
Where Positron stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Positron\User\settings.json
Global settings file. Open it from the Command Palette with Preferences Open User Settings JSON. Project overrides live in .vscode\settings.json at the project root.
~/Library/Application Support/Positron/User/settings.json
Same User settings.json layout as Windows. Workspace settings in the project's .vscode folder take precedence over these globals.
~/.config/Positron/User/settings.json
Same layout again. Positron Server and Pro sessions instead keep per user settings.json files under ~/.positron-server.
Frequently asked questions
what is the difference between user and workspace settings in Positron?
User settings apply to every window you open. Workspace settings live in a project's .vscode folder and override the user file for that project only, which is what you commit to git.
where does Positron Server store settings?
Under ~/.positron-server on the host, one settings.json per user data directory. Admins can layer default and group templates from /etc/rstudio/positron-user-settings.json over those.
