Where Does Xournal++ Store Settings and Files?

Where Xournal++ keeps settings.xml, palettes, metadata, autosaves, and plugins on every desktop OS.

Last updated

Xournal++ splits its data the Unix way: settings live in the config folder, disposable data in the cache folder. The config folder holds settings.xml, per-file metadata, and custom palettes. The cache folder holds autosaves.

Plugins and toolbar definitions ship with the app under shared resources, not in your home folder. That distinction matters at backup time. Copy the config folder and your .xopp documents; you can ignore the program install itself.

Where Xournal++ stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/xournalpp

Holds settings.xml, metadata/, and palettes/. Respects $XDG_CONFIG_HOME. Autosaves are not here since 1.2.0; look in the cache folder instead.

macOS
~/.config/xournalpp

Same layout as Linux (settings.xml, metadata, palettes). Cache and autosaves sit under ~/.cache/xournalpp. Hidden by default in Finder; use Go, Go to Folder.

Windows
C:\Users\[Your-Name]\AppData\Local\xournalpp

Holds settings.xml and subfolders. Cache and autosaves are elsewhere under a Windows INetCache path. Paste the path into Explorer since AppData is hidden.

Frequently asked questions

How do I migrate Xournal++ settings to a new computer?

Copy settings.xml plus the metadata and palettes subfolders from the old config dir to the same relative spot on the new machine. Keep the app version roughly in sync; very old settings can confuse a new release.

Where are autosave files after a crash?

Autosaves go to the cache folder under an autosaves subfolder (since 1.2.0). Check there first after a crash. Older versions used an autosave folder inside the config dir instead.
