Where Do QuickTime Recordings Get Saved on Mac?

Where QuickTime screen, movie and audio recordings go on Mac, and how the Screenshot Options folder controls them.

Last updated

QuickTime screen recordings are really Screenshot app recordings, and they auto save to the folder picked under Options (Desktop unless changed). Movie and audio recordings behave differently: they open unsaved with a placeholder name and wait for File, Save, optionally to iCloud.

That split explains most lost files. People expect every recording to ask where to go, but screen captures never ask. Check the Options menu before recording anything important.

Default for Screenshot toolbar captures including QuickTime screen recordings; change it under Options. Unsaved movie recordings show a placeholder name until File, Save. Stopped recordings may also open in an app depending on the destination.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change where QuickTime saves recordings?

Open the Screenshot toolbar (Cmd+Shift+5) and pick a folder under Options. QuickTime screen recordings follow that choice, which defaults to Desktop. Movie and audio recordings still ask at save time.

Why did one recording save itself and another ask me?

They are different capture paths. Screenshot toolbar recordings auto save to the Options folder; QuickTime movie recordings wait for File, Save with a placeholder name like Untitled.

My screen recording vanished, where is it?

Check the Screenshot Options save location first, since Sonoma era bugs sometimes ignore it and fall back to Desktop. Then search Finder for .mov files from today to catch strays.
