Where Does ReadEra Store Books and Backups?
ReadEra never copies books into its store. It tracks your files in place and exports backups as .bak files.
Last updated
ReadEra works as an index over your own files. It scans storage, remembers positions, bookmarks, and quotes, and never duplicates a book into app storage. Move or delete a file and the reader keeps your place for when it returns.
That design makes backup simple but manual. Export a .bak file holding library.json from the Backup and Restore section before switching phones. Books themselves travel separately, so copy your ebook folders too. Storage location, including SD card, is configurable rather than fixed.
Where ReadEra stores this, by platform
Your own ebook folders (indexed, never copied) + exported .bak
Books stay where you put them, commonly Downloads or a dedicated folder, with SD card supported. Export .bak from Backup and Restore to carry positions, bookmarks, and quotes. Reimport the .bak on the new device after copying the books over.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move ReadEra to a new phone?
Copy your ebook files over, then export a .bak backup from Backup and Restore on the old phone and import it on the new one. Positions survive even renamed files, but the books must exist somewhere the app can scan.
Does ReadEra duplicate my books?
No. It references files in place, which saves space and lets file managers stay in charge. The tradeoff is that deleting a book outside the app orphans nothing but also keeps nothing. The .bak backup holds metadata only, never book contents.
