Where Does RemNote Store Local Data and Backups?

RemNote keeps a full local copy of each knowledge base plus dated backups. How to find the folder from Settings on any desktop OS.

Last updated

The RemNote desktop app stores a complete copy of every knowledge base on your own drive. Each KB folder holds remnote.db (your actual notes), a backups folder of dated .db.zip files, and a files folder with every image and PDF you uploaded. This folder can grow large, and that is normal.

Don't guess the location. Open Settings > Backups > Local Backups and click View Local Backups to jump there. The path differs per machine and per knowledge base. That button always resolves to the right one, on Windows, Mac and Linux alike.

Where RemNote stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\RemNote

Electron app data. Your KB folders live nearby, but open them through Settings > Backups > Local Backups instead of digging. Close RemNote before copying anything.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/RemNote

Same setup as Windows. Use Go > Go to Folder in Finder since ~/Library is hidden. The backups subfolder inside each KB holds the dated .db.zip files.

Linux
~/.config/RemNote

Same layout under the usual Linux config root. Never delete remnote.db-shm or remnote.db-wal while the app runs. Back up with Make Backup Now first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a RemNote backup right now?

Go to Settings > Backups and click Make Backup Now. A dated .db.zip lands in the backups subfolder of that knowledge base. You set how many are kept and how much space they may use on the same page.

Can I move images from one RemNote knowledge base to another?

Yes. Open each KB's Local Storage Location from its settings, then copy the contents of the old files folder into the new one and restart RemNote. The images reappear and sync to your other devices from there.
