Where Does Sound Forge Store Settings and Projects?

Sound Forge Pro settings, window layouts and project files on Windows, and how the .frg sidecar folder works.

Last updated

Sound Forge is Windows only, and its settings live in the MAGIX corner of roaming AppData with a version numbered subfolder. Window layouts, favorites and preferences all sit there as small files, easy to copy to a second machine.

Projects deserve a warning. Saving as .frg creates the project file plus a _frg sidecar folder holding media and temp data. The pair must travel together; deleting the folder orphans the project.

Where Sound Forge stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\MAGIX\Sound Forge Pro

The version number in the path tracks your release (11.0, 12.0 and so on). Window layouts are .ForgeWindowLayout files and Explorer favorites live in ExplorerFavorites.txt. Back up the version folder before major edits.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reset all Sound Forge settings?

Hold Ctrl+Shift while double clicking the program icon. A prompt offers to reset preferences and clear cached data, which beats hunting individual files.

What is the _frg folder next to my project?

Yes. Save as a Sound Forge project (.frg) and the app creates the file plus a matching _frg folder with media and undo data. Deleting that sidecar folder breaks the project, so move both together.

Does this apply to Sound Forge Audio Studio too?

Audio Studio and Pro share the MAGIX roaming layout with version numbered subfolders. Layouts and favorites carry across machines by copying the version folder contents.
