Where Does SurfingKeys Store Keymaps and Settings?

SurfingKeys keeps keymaps and settings in per-profile browser extension storage, with sync and export options.

Last updated

SurfingKeys stores mappings in extension storage under the active profile. Default keys, custom JavaScript mappings, and search aliases share that space. An optional sync carries settings between same-browser installs.

Cross-browser moves need the export file. Translation and dictionary API keys stay out of exports, so those need manual re-entry. Everything else restores in one paste.

Where SurfingKeys stores this, by platform

Windows
%LocalAppData%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions (per profile)

Mappings per profile with optional sync. Export covers cross-browser moves. API keys stay out of exports and need re-entering by hand.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Extensions (per profile)

Same model on Mac. Firefox keeps it under ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles. Settings editor is the config file; disk holds opaque extension data.

Linux
~/.config/google-chrome/Default/Extensions (per profile)

Chromium profiles under ~/.config. Same export workflow. Custom mappings survive import intact across machines.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move SurfingKeys settings to a new browser?

Enable its sync option for same-browser moves, or export settings to a file for the rest. Custom mappings and search aliases travel either way. API keys for translation need re-entering.

Where is the SurfingKeys config file?

There is no surfingkeys rc file on disk. The options page is the config, stored in extension storage per profile. Paste shared configs into the settings editor there.
