Where Does Tunnelblick Store VPN Configs?
Tunnelblick installs .tblk configs to user Configurations or system Shared folders. Always install by dropping on the menu icon.
Last updated
Tunnelblick treats VPN configs as packages. A .tblk folder bundles the ovpn or conf file with keys, certs, and scripts. Dropping it on the menu icon installs a secured copy and asks whether it stays private or shared.
Private configs land in the user Library tree, one folder per account. Shared ones go to the system Library for all users. The app also keeps shadow and backup copies, but those are managed internally and not for hand edits. Edit private configs through the VPN Details gear menu instead.
Where Tunnelblick stores this, by platform
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Tunnelblick/Configurations
Private per user configs. Each connection is a .tblk package with keys inside. Never hand edit the secured copy.
/Library/Application Support/Tunnelblick/Shared
Shared configs for all users on the Mac. Installed via the installer tool or admin drag and drop.
Frequently asked questions
How do I install a VPN config?
Drag the ovpn or tblk onto the Tunnelblick menu bar icon and pick private or shared. Copying files by hand skips the securing step and may not work.
How do I back up my VPN configs?
Keep the original .tblk you installed from. The installed copy is secured in place, so the original doubles as backup and transfer copy.
