Where Does OpenVPN Store Config Files?
OpenVPN reads .ovpn and .conf from per OS config dirs. The Windows, Linux, and macOS spots plus samples.
Last updated
OpenVPN has no single config home; each frontend scans its own folders. The Windows GUI watches %USERPROFILE%\OpenVPN\config for per user tunnels plus C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config for system wide ones, rescanning on every tray menu open.
Linux servers and clients read /etc/openvpn, often split into client and server subfolders. macOS users typically meet Tunnelblick instead, which keeps configurations in ~/Library/Application Support/Tunnelblick/Configurations. Sample client.conf and client.ovpn ship in the docs folders as starting points.
Where OpenVPN stores this, by platform
%USERPROFILE%\OpenVPN\config
Per user .ovpn files; needs OpenVPN Administrators membership or a UAC dance without admin rights. System wide twin at C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config with logs in log beside it.
/etc/openvpn/client
Client .conf files here, server files in /etc/openvpn/server. Samples in /usr/share/doc/openvpn. Service autostart reads these dirs, so a stray file becomes a boot connection.
~/Library/Application Support/Tunnelblick/Configurations
Tunnelblick layout, not stock OpenVPN. Double clicking an .ovpn offers import here. Same rule as elsewhere: certs and keys travel with the config or inline.
Frequently asked questions
where do i put an ovpn file on windows
Drop it into %USERPROFILE%\OpenVPN\config for your user or C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config for all users. It appears in the tray menu on next open. Keep ca, cert, and key files beside it unless inline.
openvpn connects at boot unexpectedly, why
A config sitting in the scanned Linux dirs or the Windows system folder autostarts. Move one off tunnels out of those folders, or disable the service, to return to manual connections.
