Where Does Tutanota Store Data on Desktop?

Tutanota offline cache and settings on desktop, and why passwords decide how much is local.

Last updated

The Tutanota desktop app caches encrypted mail per account in offline_<id>.sqlite: %APPDATA%\tutanota-desktop on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/tutanota-desktop on Mac, ~/.config/tutanota-desktop on Linux (Flatpak under its app ID). Settings and the search index ride along.

Local depth follows your login choice: saving the password keeps an offline copy (default roughly contacts, calendars plus 30 days of mail, extendable on paid plans); otherwise the cache stays thin. Credentials themselves live in the OS keychain, never in these folders. Clearing cache is deleting the folder; support recommends exactly that.

Where Tutanota stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\tutanota-desktop\

Per account offline_<id>.sqlite plus settings and search index. Credentials in Credential Manager, not here. Delete the folder to clear cache (may vary by version).

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/tutanota-desktop/

Same offline cache role. Credentials in system Keychain. Tuta support prescribes deleting this dir for cache trouble.

Linux
~/.config/tutanota-desktop/

Default userData spot; delete to fix secret storage decrypt mismatch (forces relogin and redownload). Flatpak variant under ~/.var/app/com.tutanota.Tutanota (may vary).

Frequently asked questions

How much mail does Tutanota keep offline?

About 30 days plus contacts and calendars by default when you save the password in the client. Paid plans extend the local timeframe; without a saved password the cache stays minimal.

Tutanota shows a decrypt error on Linux. How do I fix it?

Delete ~/.config/tutanota-desktop and log in fresh. The secret storage mismatch clears with the folder, and mail redownloads from the encrypted server.
