Where Does Tux Paint Save Drawings?

Tux Paint saved drawings and config on Windows, macOS and Linux, including the stamps folder kids ask about.

Last updated

Tux Paint stores drawings in its own saved subfolder inside per OS app data. Config sits right beside it. Stamps and brushes live in shared data, not in the save folder.

Each drawing is a PNG with a data file. Copy the saved folder to move art between computers. This is easier through files than any in app export when moving many pictures.

Where Tux Paint stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\TuxPaint\saved\

PNG drawings plus .dat sidecars. Config tuxpaint.cfg sits one level up in %APPDATA%\TuxPaint\. Copy saved with Tux Paint closed.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Tux Paint/saved/

Use Go to Folder in Finder. Config sits beside saved. Older builds used ~/.tuxpaint, so check home if this path is empty.

Linux
~/.tuxpaint/saved/

Classic home folder location (also ~/.config/tuxpaint on some builds). Config tuxpaint.cfg sits in the parent. Stamps live in /usr/share/tuxpaint, not here.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up all Tux Paint drawings?

Close the app and copy the full saved folder elsewhere with a date in the name. Restoring means putting it back before launch. Each PNG needs its .dat partner to keep starter info.

Where is tuxpaint.cfg?

One level above saved in the Tux Paint data folder on each OS. It holds fullscreen, language and printer choices. Delete it to reset options while keeping drawings.
