Where Does uTorrent Keep Settings and Torrent Jobs?

uTorrent skips the registry and keeps resume.dat, settings.dat and cached torrents in an AppData folder instead.

Last updated

Everything uTorrent remembers about your torrents lives in .dat files beside cached .torrent copies. Resume.dat tracks every loaded job, settings.dat holds preferences and statistics, and the cached torrents let jobs reload after a restart.

There is a portable twist. If a settings.dat sits next to the uTorrent exe, the client uses that folder and ignores AppData entirely. Check the exe directory first when the AppData copy looks stale or empty.

Where uTorrent stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\uTorrent

Close the client before touching these files. The .dat.old copies are automatic fallbacks when a .dat corrupts.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move uTorrent to a new PC with jobs intact?

Close the client, copy the whole %APPDATA%\uTorrent folder to the same path on the new machine, then install uTorrent. Jobs resume once the downloaded files sit at matching paths.

uTorrent says it cannot save the resume file. What now?

Exit, rename resume.dat to resume.dat.bak, and restart. The client rebuilds the file from resume.dat.old. Torrent jobs may need re-adding if the fallback is stale.
