Where Does Valheim Store Mods?

Where Valheim keeps BepInEx mods, configs and logs on Windows and Linux, separate from saves.

Last updated

Valheim mods live inside the game install, not AppData. The BepInEx framework adds a BepInEx folder beside the executable: plugins for mods, config for per mod options, and a log file for load errors. Saves stay in AppDataLow under IronGate.

First launch with BepInEx installed creates the tree. Mod managers automate drops, but hand copies work the same way. On Linux through Proton the same install relative layout appears under compatdata for app 892910.

Where Valheim stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Valheim\BepInEx\plugins

One folder per mod in plugins, options in config. Launch once with BepInEx to create the tree. Logs beside them name broken mods after updates.

Linux
~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/892910/pfx/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Valheim/BepInEx/plugins

Same install relative layout under Proton for app 892910. Replace the library parent with your own path. Native builds use the same BepInEx tree beside the binary.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install a Valheim mod?

Drop the mod folder into BepInEx plugins so each mod sits in its own directory. BepInEx loads every top level entry on launch. Restart the game and read the console window for load errors.

How do I move Valheim mods to a new PC?

Copy the whole BepInEx folder with the game closed, plus your world files from AppData. Mods travel in plugins, options in config. A new machine needs the same BepInEx version before the copied set loads.
