Where Does Vorta Store Profiles and Settings?

Vorta keeps backup profiles in a settings.db file under the platform data dir, with passwords in the system keychain.

Last updated

Vorta is a frontend, so its state splits two ways. Profiles, sources, schedules, and prune rules live in a small SQLite file called settings.db. Repository passwords live in the OS keychain or secret service, outside that file.

The settings.db path follows platform convention: Library Application Support on Mac, .local/share on a pip Linux install, and the Flatpak data dir for the Flatpak build. Borg repos themselves can live anywhere. Copying settings.db migrates configuration, never backup archives.

Where Vorta stores this, by platform

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Vorta/settings.db

SQLite file with all profiles. Copy it to the same path on the new Mac. Passwords still come from the keychain, so expect a prompt.

Linux
~/.local/share/Vorta/settings.db

Same settings.db role as on Mac. Flatpak builds use the sandboxed data path instead, so check that location when the plain one is empty.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move Vorta profiles to a new computer?

Copy settings.db to the same path on the new machine before launching. That migrates every profile at once, including sources and prune rules.

How do I export a single Vorta profile?

Use the import and export buttons next to the profile selector. The JSON carries profile and repo settings, and a .vorta-init.json file in home auto imports on next start.

Where are the repository passwords kept?

In the keychain on Mac, or the secret store on Linux. The database holds the profile shape, so moving settings.db alone can still prompt for repo passwords.
