Where Are Screenshots Saved on Windows?

Win+PrintScreen and Snipping Tool autosave into Pictures/Screenshots. Which methods save where.

Last updated

Windows has three screenshot behaviors and they land in different places. Win+PrintScreen auto saves into %USERPROFILE%\Pictures\Screenshots, creating it on first use. Snipping Tool (Win+Shift+S) autosaves to the same folder when its save setting is on.

Plain PrintScreen copies to the clipboard only and saves nothing. OneDrive backup moves the Pictures tree under OneDrive, changing the effective path. Move the folder via its Location tab; the replacement must not be a system folder like Desktop or the redirect breaks.

Where Windows Screenshots stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Pictures\Screenshots

Win+PrintScreen target and Snipping Tool autosave default. Appears only after first capture. OneDrive variants live under OneDrive\Pictures\Screenshots. Move via Properties, Location tab.

Plain PrtScn only fills the clipboard. Paste into Paint to keep it. Win+PrintScreen writes the file automatically; Win+Shift+S needs autosave enabled to do the same.

Right click Screenshots, Properties, Location, Move, and pick the new folder. Windows offers to move existing shots along. Restore Default in the same tab returns to Pictures.
