Where Do Snipping Tool Screenshots Go?
Snipping Tool clipboard versus file saving on Windows, the auto save folder, and finding lost snips.
Last updated
Snipping Tool copies every snip to the clipboard, but it only writes a file when auto save is enabled or you save manually. That gap explains most lost screenshots: the image existed in memory and nowhere else.
With automatic saving on, files land in the Screenshots folder under Pictures with timestamped names. Check the tool settings first when snips vanish; the toggle sits there plainly. Pasting into Paint or chat immediately after capture rescues the clipboard only cases.
Where Windows stores this, by platform
C:\Users\[Username]\Pictures\Screenshots
Used only when automatic saving is enabled in Snipping Tool settings. Otherwise snips live in the clipboard until pasted or replaced. Win Shift S uses the same pipeline.
Frequently asked questions
My snip never saved to a file. Where is it?
It went to the clipboard only. Paste it somewhere immediately with Ctrl V before copying anything else. Then enable automatic saving in Snipping Tool settings so future snips write files.
How do I make Snipping Tool always save files?
Open Snipping Tool settings and turn on automatic saving of screenshots. New snips then land in Pictures\Screenshots with timestamps while still hitting the clipboard.
