Where Does Zulip Desktop Store Its Data?
Zulip's desktop app files server list and window state in Electron's userData folder, per OS convention.
Last updated
Zulip desktop is Electron throughout, so its files follow Electron conventions. Server list, window geometry, and client state live under the userData directory the framework assigns per OS.
The domain.json file names every connected organization, editable when the UI cannot reach them. Enterprise admins get a separate system wide config path for seeding servers fleet wide. Cache and logs sit beside the config in the same tree.
Where Zulip stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Zulip\config
domain.json lists connected organizations here. Edit with the app closed when pruning unreachable servers.
~/Library/Application Support/Zulip/config
Same file roles as Windows under the Mac application support tree. Enterprise seeding uses a separate documented system path.
Frequently asked questions
A dead organization blocks the app. How do I remove it?
Edit domain.json in the config folder and remove the dead entry. The app offers no UI for pruning unreachable organizations, so the file edit is the sanctioned workaround from issue trackers.
How do admins preset servers for everyone?
Create a global_config.json at the documented system path with the organization list. That seeds every user on the machine, which suits labs and offices better than per profile setup.
